Well if Maya requires more processing power then I guess I need to get a new PC.
You can also make hair and fur in Blender, but I haven't tried it on anything other than a sphere. Blender is actually really good for modelling. So far everything I've made in Maya I've been able to make in Blender, of course Blender is less user friendly...
I actually have a 900+ page book on character modelling in Maya which has chapters on texturing, but I haven't gotten that far in the book. It's a great book. If you ever want to make a video game character and want a detailed process then you would probably love it: [link]
Well Maya requires WAY more processing power but you can make really complicated shapes and smooth edges, oh and fur and hair is really easy. But as for learning how to import textures etc. I would go for tutorials. Video tutorials are the easiest to learn from for me but thats just my opinion. I've never used blender 3d hmmmm. For bare basics of 3D i used swift3D and then went to 3Dcanvas and i haven't touched the art since ):

I'm also learning how to use Maya PLE, but I don't even know how to acess textures from there yet.
Between the two programs I find Maya is better, but it's too expensive...

I'm not very good at texturing either. Of course whenever I try to apply a texture to my models the program crashes.
